Emergency First Aid focuses on recognizing an emergency, scene management and Life Threatening Emergencies, include Cardiac and Breathing Emergencies which can lead to the use of CPR and AEDS.

Standard First Aid includes all of the Emergency First Aid content, but also includes additional emergencies such as Bone Muscle and Joint, Sudden medical emergencies, Environmental Emergencies, Poisons and Head and Neck Injuries.

The simplest way to describe the difference is Emergency First Aid is providing immediate care while you wait for EMS/911 to arrive and life saving measures must be taken during this time. While Standard First Aid covers emergencies that aren’t life threatening now, but can be if left unrecognized.

The majority of Red Cross certifications are 3 years. Except for Basic Life Support (CPR/AED level HCP) which is annually.

The duration of our first aid courses range, please refer to the individual course to see the course duration.

In Ontario, all First Aid and CPR courses need an in-class component where you practice and are evaluated on CPR and other lifesaving skills. You can take a blended learning course which means that there is an online component done first, followed by an in-class session.

As an example, Standard First Aid:

  1. The Traditional Classroom has an interactive in the classroom experience where learners gain all the first aid knowledge and skills practice led by a First Aid Instructor. This is a 2 day course.
  1. The Blended Learning has a mix of knowledge obtained online through independent learning and classroom skills. Once registered you will receive your own unique log in to access the Red Cross Learning portal, the online portion should take 6 – 8 hours to complete. It is self directed and your staff can start and stop it as needed. It simply needs to be completed before the scheduled skills session. The scheduled skills session is 1-8 hour day in-class day.

For lay rescuer courses (CPR A, C, BLS, Emergency First Aid and Standard First Aid) our instructors will work with you to help you be successful in the course. Skills must be demonstrated to Red Cross Standard and assistance can be given to the written test portion. If you are still unsuccessful you will be invited back to another training session for the $20.00 rescheduling fee.

For Instructor Course  or advanced level certifications, if you are unsuccessful you will be invited back to take the training again at the cost of $200.00.

COURSE REQUIREMENTS TO RECEIVE CERTIFICATION:

  • Attendance: You must attend 100% of the course to be certified
  • Skills: The Canadian Red Cross has their Standards in the form of a Skills Checklist, learner must competently demonstrate each skill on the check list. Should you wish to know the skill requirements ahead of time, please email us at info@durhamfirstaid.com.
  • Written evaluation: There is a written component at the end of the course which is multiple-choice. If you have any test writing anxiety, learning disabilities, language difficulties, or if you require extra time or a private space to write, we can accommodate you. Please just make sure you let us know.  If you have any questions or concerns about the test, please do not hesitate to call, email, or speak to your instructor at the beginning of the course.
